How does direct linking (aka hot linking) work?
How does direct linking (aka hot linking) work?
Solution
Direct/Hot link means you can bypass the download page. When you send a link to a file, the transfer will begin immediately without visiting the download page. This is helpful for users downloading files from Shared folders or for hosting content linked to from an external website. The one exception to this rule is if you password protect a file. In the event of a password protected file the User will still be taken to a download page where they will be prompted for a password.
As a MediaPro customer, if you download a file from a non-MediaPro customer's account, you will still see the download page, but you will not have any advertisements. Direct/Hot linking ONLY works when download files from an account that is MediaPro enabled.
Bandwidth is managed in the following scenarios:
1. Any time direct linking is used to download a file from your account or if the file is over 200MB your account bandwidth is reduced.
2. If you download a file from another MediaPro account and you are a MediaPro user, the bandwidth is not deducted from your account, but it is deducted from the account from which you are downloading.
3. If you download a file greater then 200MB from a non-MediaPro customer then you will be prompted if you would like to use your own bandwidth to download the file. If you choose yes, the bandwidth will be deducted from your account.
4. If you run out of bandwidth, your users will automatically be sent to the download page where they can still access the file but will no longer be directly linked.
NOTE: In the future we will be sending out notices when your bandwidth reaches certain thresholds.
